3.1 Making Accessible Video and Audio Content
If your module contains time based content (such as lecture videos in place of lectures for flipped classroom settings), you will need to comply by regulations relating to Time-Based Content.
3.1.1 Audio Only Content
For pre-recorded audio (without video), you are expected to provide an alternative to this which is not time based. This can be one of the following:
-
•
A transcript of what you say in the audio;
-
•
Full lecture notes, which covers all content mentioned in the audio.
3.1.2 Video Only Content
For pre-recorded video (without audio), you are expected to provide an alternative that does not rely on sight. This can be:
-
•
Audio description of the video contents;
-
•
Full lecture notes, which cover all content covered in the video;
-
•
A typed description of what the video is (i.e. "Rotating a torus, showing geodesic lines".)
Uploaded videos should not include more than three flashes within a one second period.
3.1.3 Video with Audio
For video with audio, such as lecture videos, you should provide this content in a way that is accessible for visually impaired and/or hard of hearing students. This can be:
-
•
Provide [all information] in accessible lecture notes produced in BookML
-
•
Provide [audio description] (i.e. talk about any figures with the same guidance as for Alt Text and provide [captions]
By uploading video content to Panopto on Canvas, the following features are available
-
•
AI generated captioning (may be innacurate)
-
•
Full transcript (following the generated captions)
-
•
Space to upload time-synchronised notes, which could provide description of figures shown on screen.
Hosting video content on Panopto (rather than uploading images to Canvas) also provides more tools for the student (such as their own times notes).
